Excitement in the neighborhood
this week with visitors from nature.
While I was watering the flowers this week in my back yard, I discovered a Lunar Moth in a cedar tree. Although they are rarely seen, they are common. The adult life lasts only one week. They do not have a mouth. There only function is to mate. They are known as a giant silk worm moth.
The lunar moth has a wingspan of four and a half inches.
While I was excited by discovering the moth, right next door my neighbors had a visit from a juvenile peregrine falcon.
The falcon watched my neighbor all day.
They gave him a bowl of water.
The falcon had steak for dinner.
The neighbors ended up calling the Bird Whisperer. She is from Aviary of Paris Landing State Park that is 30 miles south of here on Kentucky Lake.
She said that the falcon is so imprinted by humans that they will probably use this bird as a teaching bird.
Thanks for stopping in.

ReplyDeleteGreat photos. I've never seen a moth like that.
ReplyDeleteHow great to find the great predator in your neighborhood. I do love the moth, too. Thanks for sharing them both.
ReplyDeleteNot far from Ky. Lake myself. Some great photos here. The shot of the lunar moth is a masterpiece, I think.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful Moth - I have never seen one like that before.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Nature Notes Joann! Happy to have you...I have never seen that moth in person, but have seen the larva here in NY... I wish the falcon was able to be released, but he will have a safe life...They are amazing raptors....Michelle

Very pretty pictures. I don't understand how this wonderful bird could not have been left as he was ? He has lived this long and was doing all right. His freedom now is gone. Yes he will be a teaching bird but he won't ever be set free. He will be kept in a cage....what life is that for a creature of God to not be able to fly ? So sad.....
ReplyDeleteI do not get why the falcon was caught. Was he sick?
ReplyDeleteAwesome photos. Wow, how lucky to have found that beautiful luna moth. Sorry the falcon has to become a teaching tool...wish he had been left to the wild.
ReplyDeletewonderful shots
ReplyDeleteHello, cool shots of the falcon. What an awesome visitor. The luna moth is a beauty, great sighting and photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend! .
ReplyDeleteHello!:) You had two great sightings, and these are amazing shots. This ephemeral moth is so beautiful, and the falcon must have been really hungry to hang around like it did,...it paid off though, and you got some excellent captures.:)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Weekend!:)

Fascinating post! Loved seeing the moth and peregrine...when he had steak for dinner, I had a chuckle! :-) Glad he's going to be used for bird education.
ReplyDeleteNeat visitor to your neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Luna! I remember the first time I saw one. Only a couple years ago!

That is one unique moth. At first I thought it was a 'flipped' photo. Beautiful.
