Alphabet Sampler Quilt

Last January, I decided to take a class called "block of the month" at our local fabric store. This is the example our teacher made.

She is a wonderful lady and very talented. I am just a slow learner. Quilting is new for me. I sewed a little in high school and made lots of my clothes. I never had any training besides my junior high home economics' teacher, who I loved. Now, my grandmother on the other hand was the Martha Stewart of sewing. When I was young, she made lots of my clothes and quilts for me. She did not need a pattern.  All she needed was a measuring tape. Every time I was at her home, she had me doing hand embroidery work.

I had a love of sewing at an early age. But after high school, I got married and never sewed until after my retirement.  I was an art teacher for 35 years.

After the first class, I was ready not to go back . Most of the  other classes I  have taken  were fun and enjoyable. This was a challenge from day one. Each of the 26 blocks were new to me.  This project called for lots of cutting and re cutting.

I am proud of my finished quilt. I chose the fabric for the borders, backing and applique.

Here are some examples of the quilt blocks.

Each week of class they gave us the pattern and the fabric for our blocks.

The fabric was cut close to size but not to the right size. We spent most of the class time cutting and re cutting.

We did not get to choose our fabric for the blocks.

Most of the blocks were sewn at home.

This is an example of the borders. It is all applique.

All the letters were  applique to the blocks  then we added a  top stitch using the blanket stitch.

My sister -in- law helped me with the blanket stitching, She was  much better turning the curves.

Thanks for stopping in - JoAnn.

  5. You quilt is beautiful and it looks challenging, especially for a beginner. There are lots of things about it I like, but I especially like the border you added (which, I think, is different than on the instructor's quilt.) You might have enjoyed the process more if you'd been able to choose the fabrics. Well done!
